Working on food shots can be a delicious job. Bringing out the colors and textures of the shot to help the food look as appetizing as possible is a fun challenge.

Sometimes this means simply retouching out distracting bits and specks along with some color correction like the shot above. This image, shot by Teri Campbell, was used as an example in the book I co-authored with Katrin Eismann and Wayne Palmer, Photoshop Restoration & Retouching. Below you can see the “Before” image.

Before Retouching and Color Corrections

And sometimes food shots require more extensive work, compositing different plates, retouching out wires or support pieces, etc in addition to the usual retouching and color corrections. Here we have another shot from Teri. This tasty shot with the ice cream cones involved combining different shots of the ice cream to build up the right drips and toppings while also deleting the wire armatures used to keep everything in place

One big hint for photographers: whenever you’re shooting something that will need things like these wires removed be sure to also shoot a “Blank Plate” that is shoot the background with the same lighting, camera position etc. Blank Plates make removing elements, filling holes, etc etc much simpler saving time while reducing your retouching costs.
