A retoucher’s job is to help bring the client’s vision to life. Sometimes that just means doing a bit of cleanup and color correction. And sometimes that means working to solve some issues that could not be controlled during the shoot.
In this project, shot by Colin McGuire, the challenging issue was the weather. Anyone who’s ever shot on location knows the one thing you can’t control is the weather. In this case the goal was to capture the late afternoon light with its warm glow and strong shadows.
But the weather had other ideas that day leaving Colin and his crew to deal with overcast, drizzly skies.
And that’s when Colin brought me on to the team.
The post production work included not only some compositing, combining ‘hero’ frames for the various characters in the shot, but also making the ‘greens’ a more consistent green while boosting the shadows to add some of the drama the late afternoon light was supposed to add. Then I made sure the red shirts matched the product’s logo color. Finally new skies and some custom made lens flares completed the look.
As for the client’s reaction, this was a ‘Hole in One”.
